Entering Virtual Prayer in the age of COVID-19

These were the words with which I started our first Live Stream only prayer service, in the wake of the Coronavirus Pandemic:

As we begin our service this morning, I want to take a moment to name that none of us could have predicted that we would be here. We could have never imagined that we would gather as our tradition teaches “from the four corners of the earth.” None of us could have guessed that — at least for the time being it would be distance that will keep us safe.

Yet, in this moment of crisis and uncertainty, we as Jews and members of Jewish communities do what our ancestors have always done: we lean into Jewish tradition and ritual for comfort, for strength, for hope, and for community. We may not be together in body, but we are together in spirit and we take comfort in knowing we are there for each other today and beyond.

As we enter into prayer and speak aloud ancient words, may our racing minds find some rest.

May our hearts find some healing.

May our bodies find strength.

May our souls find peace.

May the bonds between us continue to know no bounds. May we hold each other in love.
